How to use this calculator
Squaring means multiplying a number by itself. When you enter a fraction, both its numerator and denominator are squared and the answer is reduced. The tool distinguishes squaring a negative number in parentheses from placing a minus sign in front of an already squared number.
The method

Scope and limitations
Plain decimal and fraction inputs are supported, with at most 64 characters per decimal component. Exact fractions are preserved; the decimal result is a rounded approximation.
Common questions
Why is the square of a negative number positive?
Multiplying two negative numbers gives a positive result. For example, (-3) * (-3) = 9.
Does the tool round my input first?
No. Decimal inputs are converted into exact fractions before squaring.
