The constant-acceleration equations connect initial velocity, final velocity, acceleration, time, and displacement. Select the three known quantities, use a consistent sign convention, and let the calculator solve the remaining values. A displacement-time graph helps reveal whether the motion changes direction.

The method

v = u + at; s = ut + at^2/2

Scope and limitations

One-dimensional motion with constant acceleration. Time must be nonnegative. Degenerate inputs that cannot determine a unique result are rejected. The output is displacement, not total distance traveled.

Common questions

Can velocity or acceleration be negative?

Yes. Negative signs represent direction relative to your chosen positive axis.

Why is displacement different from distance?

Displacement is the signed change in position. Distance counts the entire path, including any movement that later reverses.
