How to use this calculator

To average durations, first express each one in a common unit. This tool converts the durations to seconds, adds them, divides by the number of entries, and formats the result back into hours, minutes, and seconds. It can help compare repeated tasks, laps, and other elapsed intervals.

The method

Mean duration = sum of durations in seconds / number of durations

Enter the values in the labeled fields, check the units or selected mode, and choose Calculate. The result includes the applicable working and a breakdown or visual when useful. Change an input and calculate again to update the result.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Durations: 02:30; 03:15; 01:45

Average duration: 0:02:30

Hours : minutes : seconds (rounded to milliseconds).

Scope and limitations

Elapsed durations only, not clock times or dates. No weighting is applied. Results are displayed to the nearest millisecond, and up to 1,000 durations are accepted.

Common questions

Can durations exceed an hour?

Yes. Use HH:MM:SS, such as 02:15:30, or use a minutes-and-seconds duration such as 135:30.

Can I average 11 PM and 1 AM?

Not with this tool. Clock times across midnight need a separate circular-time convention.
