How to use this calculator

A number line places real numbers in order. Enter a list to sort values from smallest to largest, or enter a supported simple inequality to display its interval. Fractions are converted to numeric positions, and repeated values occupy the same position.

The method

Smaller real numbers lie to the left of larger real numbers

Enter the values in the labeled fields, check the units or selected mode, and choose Calculate. The result includes the applicable working and a breakdown or visual when useful. Change an input and calculate again to update the result.

WORKED EXAMPLE

Numbers, inequality, or interval: -3, 1/2, 0, 2.5

Numbers in ascending order: -3, 0, 0.5, 2.5

Smallest to largest on the real number line.

Scope and limitations

Up to 100 numeric values, or the same simple interval grammar used by the Interval Notation Calculator. This tool does not solve arbitrary equations or nonlinear inequalities.

Common questions

Are larger negative numbers farther left?

Numbers with greater negative magnitude are farther left: -5 is smaller than -2.

Can I plot an open endpoint?

Yes. Enter an interval with parentheses, such as (1,4], or an inequality such as x > 1.
